Commas 101

It makes me a little bit sad inside that COM 106: Writing for Communications Practitioners is a required class for the journalism major. Why does it make me sad? Because as it turns out, COM 106 is a grammar class. Yes, grammar. As in nouns, prepositions, semicolons and subject-verb agreement. I'm not only sad that I, personally, have to take it; I'm also sad that students wanting to go into the field of journalism (journalism!) had such poor grammar that the school thought a remedial English course might be a good idea.

It's sort of like organic chemistry majors having to first take BIO 106: Model Volcanos That Explode With Baking Soda. Don't you think?
